I can't believe that even from the inception of this forum we have not had a general 'cool science things' or 'cool science news' topic. I'm pretty sure plenty of us are Nerdy/Geeky enough to follow science and technology news circuits... right?

Well, this is the topic to post about interesting science-based things, videos, articles, photos, even papers. Nerd your little brains out.

I shall begin with just something cool I found on one of the Facebook pages I follow: X-rays of fish. D:

Gallery of a variety of sea life being blasted with cancer rays!

BAM.

Also, this:

Life on Mars laughing since 1976?

So... does this topic deserve a sticky?! ;D

I'm reading physics/science articles everyday. I especially like the second link you posted. I wonder how much data we have that's been processed, that needs to be reanalayzed with newer technology/methods for a correct analysis.

CERN (The group who erroneously recorded neutrinos surpassing the speed of light) has found a new subatomic particle.

Also, the creators of Google and James Cameron are backing (creating?) a company called Planetary Resources. The goal of planetary resources is to go mine the hell out of resource rich asteroids. Which is the most awesome/exciting thing I've heard in a while.

Not so much science as it is a tribute. A tribute to the greatest man who ever lived.

Holy *Navi*. He really is the greatest man who ever lived. He's like the Jesus of science/technology.

So nobody saw fit to post here that we found the Higgs Boson. The probability of the Boson we found not being the Higgs is one in several trillion. That is all.

Pretty sure they're still trying to make sure it's not a higgs imposter... Still exciting news, nonetheless.

Testing, yes, but that's true of any discovery. They also said the chances of it not being the Higgs are absurdly low.

Yay biological storage!

Quote:
A bioengineer and geneticist at Harvard’s Wyss Institute have successfully stored 5.5 petabits of data — around 700 terabytes — in a single gram of DNA, smashing the previous DNA data density record by a thousand times.

So apparently we're able (sorta) to take a quantum measurement without collapsing the wave function now.
