Post Am I Building This Computer Right? D: • Posted: Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:12 am
I'm building a computer for my brother for his christmas/birthday gift AND I wanted to know from any of you nerds out there if there are any details that I overlooked while compiling the parts that I want to use to build this thing. I haven't ordered anything yet, but I already have some old parts of my own that I'm going to put in to save money. They are: A 480 Watt Power Supply(I already know this is enough power, btw), a 2 GB of RAM stick, and a video card, specifically an HD Radeon 5570. Outside of monitor, keyboard, and mouse, this is what I am planning to purchase:

Windows 8:

Tower:

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131758

Processor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103960&name=Processors-Desktops

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233371
(An extra 8 GB stick to go with the 2 GB stick I already have)

Hard Drive:

Optical Drive:

HDMI Cable:

So yeah, and the budget is $700 and this build does go a little bit over the budget with tax, but it's only a few dollars. If anyone has ANYTHING to comment about this build, if there's anything that sucks about it, something that could be better, something that's maybe even unnecessarily good to the point where it's useless to buy, if a brand is terrible, etc, LET ME KNOW. Also if anyone has a good tower to recommend i'd appreciate that, I wasn't too confident about the choice because I know nothing about them. But yeah, anything anyone has to say about this would be great because I'm kind of going into this in the dark, having some reassurance that I'm doing this right would be awesome! :D

Update: I found a better processor for cheaper, somehow, which is amazing. Same exact kind of processor, too, so idk what AMD is doing there. Maybe some kind of sale? But anyway, this puts me under the $700 dollar budget, so that's awesome. Here she is:

What is this build going to be used for?

For a computer. Web browsing, media, programs...nothing heavy duty or professional, however i want to make sure that if he wants he can upgrade this to a really good gaming computer if he just invests in an awesome graphics card.

Yeeeeah, that power supply probably won't suffice. I was running a 650watt PSU when I was running a 5570, everything else seems to be fine. The motherboard will be pretty damned important too if you're looking to upgrade later.

It only needs about 325 Watts. The 5570 is weak sauce dude, it was in the same computer the 480 Watt was purchased in. The PSU MAY need an upgrade depending on a video card upgrade but everything is okay here, trust me.

Well that would depend on how much power your other components are going to be consuming to be honest, but you're probably right. You should be fine. But don't be too surprised if you can't get the disc drive to open because you don't have enough power going to your machine.

No, the whole computer needs 325. That's max power too, not minimum. The card alone probably only needs like 50.

Edit: I looked it up, It actually needs a minimum of 27 Watts, recommended wattage for the card alone is actually 50 exactly, so that's a lucky guess on my part xD

Huh? I mean it like it's just going to be used as a regular household computer. Nothing fancy, no gaming for now. Didn't mean it like that. It seems like the build is okay with everyone though, so I'm probably ordering it anyway. After all, this is pretty basic stuff.

Just make sure your RAM will work with the board you chose. I have no objections.

I changed the RAM to a 4 GB card instead of 8 GB because I figured that 6 GB of RAM is the most anyone would ever need. 10 just seems like an unnecessary waste of money to me. And yes the RAM is definitely compatible. But yeah thanks a ton, gonna order it right now :D
