Well, since this is a rather big deal in american politics (sorry canadians), I figured it was time for a discussion thread. I personally don't like the socialist idealism behind it, but that doesn't mean I don't think it will work under certain circumstances. What do you guys think about the bill?

Oh nos! I'm going socialist because I realize we need some government interaction with big business. Without that, they will cause big business (a.k.a. the morgage companies, etc.) will go out and do it ALL OVER AGAIN. Despite that, I think we need the bailout, and not because I like the idea of tax payer dollars being used, but so we can save the economy. Afterwards, we should probably go and regulate the morgage companies, make commitees in congress do this that and make sure this foreclosure process doesn't happen again. Without that, we might end up in another Great Depression, and this one might very well be much greater than the last. That one might be looked as the MINOR Great Depression if the government does NOTHING about the issue. So, there, this is what my senior papers going to be on, so I need to know this issue front-wards and back-wards; right now, however, this is just an oppinion. Research is coming, I assure you, however. :P

Hey, I wasn't saying, Im completely opposed to it, just that I don't like the slight inclination of socialism in it. I mean, doesn't it go against the fundamentals of the free enterprise system to have government interference?

Not really, that's like saying that there should be no governing force over anything; there's got to be a set of rules for everyone. Businesses need to be somewhat regulated or they'll begin to running the country.
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

Exactly, and that's why we need to find the happy middle-ground, so to speak, or whatever you might want to call it. It can't be so regulate that it becomes a full-on, Europian socialist society, but we can't have it be a complete free enterprise either. If we did; this will continue happening, and the government--our government--is one of the people and not one of BIG BUSINESS IS KING, at least, that's how it should be. :P

Exactly (I actually have a shirt with that quote on it :P ), but isn't bailing a business out every time they get in trouble giving them more power? We're basically saying "Hey, we couldn't live without you, so if you get in trouble, just come to us for money". I personally think that the government should be in charge of law regulation and national defense (and when it comes to it, any war efforts). When I give money I've made to the government, I expect that money to either fund the war in iraq, pay cops and firemen, or pay for a dam to be built so my house doesn't get flooded. I don't, however, expect the money I've rightfully earned and worked for to go to a company who's blown all of their money.
