I had this problem with XP. You may have a boot sector virus, in which case your files are done.

But yes I would advise you to call Geek Squad. Get someone who can actually take a look at your computer to actually take a look at your computer.

Grab your Windows 98 CD/floppy (I forget which it's on.) and put it in your main disk driver or floppy drive. When you get the option "Press any key to boot from CD/Floppy" push any key. Windows will start up from there. The options from there, I'm unsure of. Good Luck!

Also, are you allowed to go into your BIOS? (press f2 for bios :D)

Like... A floppy disc that has Windows on it. I'm not sure if Windows 98 came on a CD or a floppy though. Could be both. Either way, find that, and put it into the computer. If you're asking what type of floppy disc, then I am unable to answer your question, as I forget if Floppies come in various sizes (space wise) and I don't think that they had Zip Drives until after 2000 was made. Please be a tad more specific with your questions. :D

Well, considering your computer is a decade old and it's recommended you get a new one at least every 4 years... I would just do that if you have the money. Plus 98 is so unsecured and vulnerable to attacks.

Yes and no.
You don't have money for a legal copy, so you'll have to resort to doing what me and Carbide do. *Note: I do not in any way authorize the use of piracy. Use at your own risk.

Haha don't get off topic. And no flaming, use PMs or emails instead.

No way to fix this problem for free really, sorry I couldn't be anymore help.

Try going to a more tech savvy forum, maybe one specifically for computer issues.

Yarg! i mean... step one: come up with about $15
step two: go to hardware store
step three: buy a 4lb or heavier dead-blow-hammer (i prefur the claw hawk brand)
step four: take computer outside (easier clean up)
Step five: count how many blows it takes to break the hammer and scatter the lead shot across the ground!
step six: relax! (the computer has died a very grusome death but you should feel better!)
step seven: here's an M80 and 2 matches (you should know what to do  )
Step eight: start looking to see what you want in a new computer

it's problt too old to upgrade, and out of date to use for parts, best i can tell you, *open the hard drive, take out the magnent, and have fun destroying the rest  , computers make good kindling lol*
