Post Pronunciation, or "How do you say this?" • Posted: Sun Jul 13, 2008 7:01 pm
Now, I feel it would be an interesting exercise to see how the many people who populate this forum pronounce various words from the Zelda series. Two that are constantly troubling me are 'Farore' and 'Kakariko'. I myself alternate between two pronunciations of the words.

Farore: either FAR-or, or fa-ROAR-ay
Kakariko: either kah-KA-ree-koh, or KAH-ka-REE-koh

[Note that the emphasis is placed on the capitalised syllables.]

So, how do you pronounce these, or any other words? Feel free to post your way of saying any words from the Zelda series.

Well, I don't really know how to do the pronunciations and spellings but I will do my best.

A couple words, which I know are easy for most of you to pronunce, aren't easy for me. I have a couple different ways of saying different words.

Kokiri: co-kee-ree; co-ker-ee

Nayru: nah-roo; nay-roo

Until just recently, I called them all by completely different names (Kokiri was Koriki, Kakariko was Kariako, etc.) I've taught myself otherwise. Anyway, I typically pronounce Farore as Fa-Roar-Eh, Kakariko as Ka-KAR-rico, Kokiri as KOK-eeree, and Nayru as Neigh-Rew.

You know, I hear a lot of crap about teenage pregnancy these days, and it's actually kind of offensive. Why? I was born to teenage parents. You see, my mother was 15 when I was born, and my father was 17. However, upon my birth, both my mother and my father strove to be good parents despite the odds. When I was 7 years old (placing my mother at 22 and my father at 24), my biological mother and father were married. Yes, my mother is 35 and I am 20, and so far, that has yet to be a hindrance.

Farore: Always and probably will forever pronounce it as Fair-OR

Nayru: Used to pronounce it as NAH-roo but now it's Neigh-roo

Kokiri: Always and probably will forever pronounce it as KOH-key-ree

Kakariko: blah blah blah blah: KAHK-ah-REE-ko

Now how about Ganon? I've heard it as 'GAHN-in' (excuse my very pitiful skills at doing pronounciations xD) but I've always stated it as 'GAHN-on'.

The first is probably the official way since Ganondorf pronounces the first part like that (and so do I), for some reason I do it differently for just Ganon xD.

I usually said Ocarina like Ah-kah-ree-na. Now I say Oh-kah-ree-na.

Deku: Dee-koo. Now pronounced Day-koo.

This one is a little funny, in Ocarina of Time, when I first got it, I said obtained like Oh-bay-tend.

Gerudo: Ger-roo-doo.

Can't think of more. Maybe later.

There's some of my other ones. >_>

Goron = GOR-on
Deku = Dee-que
Gerudo = GRRR-oooh-Doh
Nayru = Neigh-Roo
Midna = Mid-Nah
Kokiri = Cock-Er-Eee (I may get some weird looks for this one, but I'm honestly not trying to make it sound bad.)

Farore = Fah-Roar
Ganon = Gan-Un
Epona = Ep-own-ah

Mr. Goron is awesome *cough* subliminal messages.

Koume: KOO-may
Kotake: koh-TAH-kay (koh: like "Oh"; tah: like car)
Onox: OWN-ox
Veran: VEER-an
Malon: MA-lon (short 'a')
Ganondorf: GA-nun-dorph (ga: short 'a'; dorph: like wharf/Worf)
Dampe: DALM-pay (dalm: like calm)

Strange how I pronounce "coo" differently to "ccoo". Also, a friend of mine usually pronounces "ocarina" as o-ree-cah-nah (short 'o').
