Since I'm going to get a new laptop soon, I'll post my old one for posterity:

850MHz single-core processor
512MB RAM
40GB hard drive
Some ancient stock graphics card
Windows XP Pro
12.1 inch 1024x768 LCD display
Broken trackpoint buttons that cause the cursor to become stuck to the side of the screen when pressed
Broken fan, so everything is slowly melting
Only 1 working USB port; other three broken

...So glad to be getting an upgrade soon.

I also convinced my friend to rebuild my computer into his old case for $30
New case I'm buying for $30: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

Got to love better air flow :D

...and no one here is rich enough to buy liquid nitrogen cooling systems, so lets drop the arms race. :P

Instead. Caleb is planning on building a new PC next year, so maybe we should suggest some builds that are powerful and affordable?

He's looking for a pretty powerul gaming PC, single GPU. Given our heavier emphasis on broadcasting, definitely a fast core, and I can probably help him OC his machine. Only question is... to RAID0 or not to RAID0.

Dual GPU might end up being cheaper and more powerful than a single. Just sayin.

Is there any reason he specifically doesn't want dual?

Yea.

SLI is the bane of broadcasting setups and technologies. A lot of crashing... and all the hassle he had to go through to set up SLI versus the benefit, and how much additional grief SLI caused when he tried to broadcast.

I think he's going non-SLI just because SLI grief has jaded him.

I also thought that SLI tech had come farther, but I think he doesn't feel like dealing with it.

Has he looked into Crossfire?

I don't know if Crossfire is any more friendly. The real problem lies in broadcasting tech. The programs and hardware are all just kinda not built with multi-GPU in mind.

I mean like... they're still not built with multi-monitor in mind either, which is a huge pain in the butt. Or fullscreen for that matter.

I'd say go for a Dual-Core/Crossfire rig. If he's lookin to spend, EVGA just released the GTX 580. A GTX 460 is nice too. Any idea on how much he's lookin' to spend on it? (Always nice to have a predetermined budget)

Also, to help cut some cost, I tell everyone to get procs from here. They're generally about $70 cheaper for intel, and I've seen a couple AMD ones go for $100 less. They do not ship procs, it looks like, so if you have a buddy in the states, or possibly even would be willing to make a trip for the cost, it'd probably be worth it.

Well... I offered to help build Caleb's new computer when he gets it, because he generally rather would have wherever he buys it from pre-assemble it. (Usually the local computer store, Memory Express.)

I've suggested buying parts from the Canadian West Coast's favorite retailer, NCIX, dunno if he'll bite on that though. They regularily have good offers.

I'll probably start looking into crossfire or SLI options just in case... newer cards a better built for it than the 8800GTs were, and Caleb doesn't really update drivers much unless he has to. :\

Totally worth the cost. And it's uber overclockable.

I was kinda thinking of splurging on an EVGA model, superclocked (cause this way, they warranty that the card is OC'able) with the external exhaust... yay/nay?

I can nab one of these suckers for $205 CDN. Gawd this is an expensive year.
